What are your past/current experiences working in the field of disabilities, allied health, education, or school?
In college I had the opportunity to nanny children with various abilities and needs. This experience opened my eyes to the notion that the education and medical care of children must be interlinked for their functional development. After graduating, I spent three years as a rehabilitation tech at a pediatric outpatient facility at Children’s Health Dallas. My time as a tech exposed me to the numerous diagnoses that effected children and their families daily. I learned how speech, physical, and occupational therapy came together to help patients meet their goals. These included mobility, academic, and social skills based on client-centered collaboration. I also saw how these rehabilitative sciences worked with physicians and teachers to enhance the care and development of children.
What are your goals for your Interprofessional Preparation experience?
My goals for the Interprofessional Preparation Experience include enhancing my knowledge of the unique programs and resources available to children with developmental disabilities and their families. An additional goal is to enrich my communication and teamwork skills that are vital as a healthcare professional.
What do you wish to contribute as a future Related Service Provider &/or Special Education Teacher?
In my future career as an occupational therapist, I hope to contribute evidence-based, client-centered care for children and their families. In conjunction with my degree in occupational therapy, I envision that this experience will aid in my development of knowledge and clinical skills working with those who receive special education services. My hope is that this program will support my development as an occupational therapist, while simultaneously allowing me the opportunity learn how to give effective and impactful care to children in the community.
