Human Development Center: Building Capacity, Inspiring Change

Emily Faucheux

Throughout my life I have spent time a lot of time working with children with and without disabilities. I worked as a caretaker for a child with autism. I volunteered for Special Olympics, the Make a Wish foundation, as well as a church camp. I also interned at my local church to help create a safe and educational environment for the children’s ministry. Through these activities I gained valuable experience in caring for and advocating for others, especially those who cannot advocate for themselves.

There are many skills I hope to gain from this experience Interprofessional Preparation Program. I want to learn more about the school system and what children with disabilities need in order to perform their best. I hope to get a better understanding of the role other professions play in child centered care and how to combine the different fields of study in my practice. Lastly, I hope this experience allows me to become a better audiologist so that I can give my future patients the best care possible.

My future career goal is to start a private practice that has a focus on children with disabilities. This includes being able to train the staff brought in to have a better understanding of how to handle tough situations with children with disabilities so that both the employees and the children are comfortable. To provide the best total care for each child, I would like to include other specialties in the practice such as speech pathology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Since I want to focus on children with disabilities, the more augmented experience I have with these children the better equipped I will be for my future goals. This program is a fantastic way to broaden my knowledge on children with disabilities and other fields in allied health to give these patients the best care possible.
