Kevin

Employment Progress: five_coin

Since the time Kevin's father passed away when he was 11 years old, he has been shuffled from one relative to another. Now for the past year, he has been living on his own in a supported housing program with a roommate. Since he is not particularly close with his remaining family, he participates in many social activities with friends. He especially enjoys riding his bicycle around town, preferring it to public transport. He likes football tailgate parties and Mardi Gras parades. Now that he feels more settled in his apartment, he is ready to find a job so he can have some extra spending money. Kevin has had various jobs in the past, mostly at supermarkets where his duties have included bagging groceries, retrieving buggies, assisting customers with their groceries, performing light janitorial duties and some restocking. He also has held jobs at several fast food restaurants frying burgers, making pizza sauce and folding pizza boxes. He has held so many previous jobs because he has moved so many times. Kevin is looking for an entry level part time position but apart from that does not have any strong preferences. He is very social and the jobs he enjoyed the most involved interactions with customers. Though he enjoys many physical activities, he would prefer a job that is indoors and not too physically demanding.

Kevin's Job Path

Job Development

When the manager at Burger King said she needed a lobby attendant that would talk to the customers, the Employment Specialist thought immediately about Kevin. Kevin likes to talk, almost too much, and can find something in common with nearly everyone he meets. The first time Kevin was brought to the Burger King to talk with the manager, he referred to it as his "Mardi Gras Burger King". It turned out to be his favorite Burger King in the city filled with many happy memories of watching parades in the street nearby. Kevin hinted at a job that so far had not been offered by saying "I want to work here so I can watch the parades from inside and not from the crowd." The manager replied "Well, you won't be able to watch the parades if you're working." And so a job offer was born. Kevin already had a good feeling about the place, so he was doubly thrilled when he discovered that one of the shift managers turned out to be a family friend. She had even attended his parents wedding before Kevin was even born. Having a family friend looking out for him on the job will be a great support for Kevin. If ever a job was meant to be, this was it.

Job Placement

Kevin was offered the position of Lobby Attendant to maintain and clean the dining area and bathrooms. From the day he knew he was going to get the job up to the day he started, Kevin talked about nothing else to his friends. He even went to the Employment Specialist's office every day and asked how things were proceeding. Finally the day came when all the paperwork had been completed and everything was ready for Kevin to start training. Kevin's part time schedule was negotiated to be Monday through Friday for four hours a day during the peak lunch time. A job coach named Sidney was selected to accompany Kevin and provide the initial training and support. Sidney knows Kevin well from working at both Kevin's group home and at his day program. Kevin's first day at work didn’t turn out exactly as planned. He was scheduled to begin computer training and the computer had crashed. As a result, his first day was postponed to the following Monday. Luckily he was able to receive his first company polo shirt and matching cap which he proudly showed off to his friends.

Job Placement

Kevin's first week at work was spent on a computer going through learning modules about Burger King. They covered everything about Burger King that can be imagined; from history to food preparation to cleanliness policies to customer service. Sidney turned out to be the perfect Job Coach for Kevin. With much patience they went through about a dozen learning modules together, slide by slide. For every slide, they would read the information aloud and then discuss what was said. While proceeding through the modules, Sidney also took careful notes and at the end of every module would quiz Kevin about the information. With this excellent level of support, Kevin was able to pass the tests completely on his own. Without it, he may not have gotten past the first slide.

After completing the learning modules, Kevin proclaimed "I have the best Job Coach ever". Sidney replied "Kevin's a smart guy but I know without me he wouldn't have been able to get through the modules on his own. I was happy to help." The next part of the job training involved training the specific job duties which included wiping tables, pushing in chairs, mopping the floor, cleaning the bathroom, emptying the inside trash bins, cleaning the glass doors, and refilling the drink dispensers.

"I love this job. When I get home today, I'm going to hop on my bike and come back and work some more." After it was explained to him that this was not a good idea and that he needed permission to work extra hours he replied "Then I will at least work until the very last minute I can before my ride arrives."
